A Simple Insurance Check You Can Do Without an Agent

A new year often brings fresh goals—healthier habits, better budgeting, smarter investments. But there’s one financial task most people keep postponing: reviewing their insurance.

It’s easy to understand why. Insurance feels technical, time-consuming, and often tied to uncomfortable sales conversations. Many assume that reviewing policies automatically leads to buying more coverage. So the documents stay unopened, premiums get deducted quietly each month, and life moves on.

The truth is simpler. You don’t need an appointment, a pitch, or an entire weekend. With about 20 minutes and the right documents, you can check whether your current protection still makes sense for your life today.

Why Most People Avoid Reviewing Their Insurance

There are two common fears.

First, you might discover you’re underinsured. That can feel stressful—especially if you have dependents or outstanding loans. Second, you worry that any review turns into a sales conversation pushing upgrades you didn’t plan for.

So instead, many people rely on autopilot. Premiums continue, policies remain unchanged, and years pass without reassessment.

But insurance is meant to protect a specific version of your life. If your circumstances have changed—marriage, children, a new mortgage, a job switch—your coverage should evolve too.

What You Actually Need to Review

You don’t need to become an expert. Just gather four documents:

Your policy contract, which shows coverage amounts, policy term, and what’s included.

A benefit illustration or product summary, especially for investment-linked or whole life policies.

A premium breakdown or annual statement that shows what you’re paying and for how long.

Your corporate insurance summary, if your employer provides group coverage.

Most insurers provide these digitally. Once you have them ready, you can run through three straightforward checks.

Step 1: Does Your Coverage Still Match Your Life?

Insurance exists to protect against financial loss. The key question is whether it still protects the right things.

A common guideline is to aim for death and total permanent disability coverage of around nine times your annual income, and critical illness coverage of about four times your annual income. These are reference points, not rigid rules—but they’re useful for a quick benchmark.

If you earn $60,000 a year, that suggests roughly $540,000 in life coverage and $240,000 in critical illness protection.

Now compare that with what you actually have. Include personal policies and corporate coverage provided by your employer. Then identify any shortfall.

Life changes matter.

If you recently took on a large mortgage, have a spouse who relies on your income, or welcomed a child, your old coverage may be insufficient.

On the other hand, if your children are financially independent and your mortgage is fully paid, you might be carrying more coverage than necessary. Insurance that was appropriate 15 years ago may not reflect today’s responsibilities.

Corporate coverage deserves special attention. Many employers provide group life insurance, often tied to your salary. But that protection usually ends the moment you leave your job. It should be counted in your current protection, but not relied upon for long-term planning.

Step 2: Are Your Premiums Sustainable?

Affordability isn’t just about this year—it’s about the next 10, 20, or 30 years.

A practical rule of thumb is to keep protection-related insurance within about 15 percent of your take-home pay. If your monthly take-home income is $5,000, that suggests staying below $750 in protection premiums.

Add up everything: life insurance, critical illness riders, health insurance plans, and supplementary riders.

If you are comfortably below the threshold, you may have room to adjust coverage if needed. If you are above it, you may need to reassess whether you are over-insured or paying for features you are unlikely to use.

Health insurance deserves particular attention. Premiums tend to increase with age. A plan that feels affordable in your 30s can become a significant expense in your 50s and 60s. Ask yourself honestly what type of hospital ward you would realistically choose if hospitalised. If you would opt for a subsidised ward, paying for higher-tier coverage may not align with your actual preferences.

For bundled products like whole life or investment-linked policies, understand how much of your premium goes toward protection versus savings or investments. If protection is your primary goal, term insurance may provide similar coverage at a lower cost.

Step 3: Watch for Red Flags

Some issues have nothing to do with coverage amounts—they relate to policy integrity.

First, check that your personal details and health disclosures are accurate. If anything was incorrectly recorded during application, it could complicate future claims. Reviewing your declaration section ensures everything matches your situation at the time you applied.

Second, consider whether premiums feel sustainable. If you have ever struggled to make payments, explore options early rather than letting a policy lapse. Reducing coverage or adjusting terms is better than losing protection altogether.

Third, confirm you have nominated beneficiaries. Without a nomination, payouts may be delayed by legal processes, which can create unnecessary stress for your loved ones.

What If You Find Gaps?

If you discover a shortfall or an affordability issue, it doesn’t mean you must immediately purchase a new product. It means you have clarity.

You can compare options online, speak directly to insurers for factual information, or consult an adviser with specific questions rather than a blank slate.

The key difference is that you are initiating the conversation from a position of knowledge.
